This artwork by Carl Friedrich Lessing achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in Amsterdam in March 2001. In the GERMAN PICTURES, FURNITURE AND WORKS OF ART auction, the work A hermit reading in grotto overlooking a mountainous landscape sold for NLG 7,050.00 (€ 3,265.25) - well above the upper estimate of NLG 3,500.00. Admittedly, works by Carl Friedrich Lessing have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Two Travellers In Prayer At A Shrine In A Wooded River Landscape in December 2015 with an auction result of GBP 11,875.00 (€ 16,125.68).
