Signed and dated 'A.Hickel 1793' (lower right) and with inscription by the 2nd Earl of Eldon 'Sir John Scott, Lord Chancellor Eldon. By A. Hickel./This is a portrait, painted in 1793 by A. Hickel, of the late Rt Honble Sir John Scott, Earl of/Eldon, who died Janry 13th 1838 in the 87th year of his age, having been for nearly twenty-five years/Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. This picture belonged to him, and becoming under his will at his/decease the property of his daughter Lady Elizabeth Repton was by her given to me./Eldon. 1840.' (on the reverse)

In the Property From Encombe, Dorset & La Chasse, Jersey auction, the work Portrait of John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838), bust-length, in a blue coat and white stock, feigned oval sold for GBP 4,560.00 (€ 6,879.99) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 2,500.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Anton Hickel - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Bildnis der Caroline Pichler und ihres Bruders., which sold at auction in June 2020 for CHF 14,940.00 (€ 14,051.40).

Für andere Arbeiten von Anton Hickel mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Bildnis der Caroline Pichler und ihres Bruders. beobachtet, die im Juni 2020 für CHF 14.940,00 (€ 14.051,40) versteigert wurde.
