Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A Calm Sea With A Man Of War And A Fishing Boat by Julius Porcellis was auctioned at Sothebys in London in December 2013, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 15,000.00 – 20,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 13,750.00 (€ 16,539.12). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Julius Porcellis - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A wijdschip lowering sails with fishermen in a rowing boat hauling in their nets, as a storm approaches, which sold at auction in November 2000 for NLG 87,765.00 (€ 41,116.50).
