Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Twelve unframed illustrations of characters in Dickens' novels (one illustrated) by Joseph Clayton Clarke was auctioned at Christies in London in October 2007, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 200.00 – 400.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 187.50 (€ 269.26). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Joseph Clayton Clarke - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work 7 Plates, from Some Well Known Characters from the Works of Charles Dickens, c. 1890, which sold at auction in February this year for USD 1,020.00 (€ 962.08).
