2 volumes, folio (460 x 312mm.), text in German, Latin and occasionally French, 132 hand-coloured engraved plates by Susemihl and others (some plates on Whatman paper dated 1794, some on M. de I.A. Huber watermarked paper), nineteenth-century half calf, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, red morocco lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, lacking title and preliminary leaves,scattered spotting, extremities rubbed
Teutsche Ornithologie was originally issued in parts between 1800 and 1817, with the second edition appearing between 1837 and 1841. The work was an attempt to create "a German parallel to the sumptuous ornithological works of other countries, notably of France, e.g. Levaillant's works, to which it was compared at the time" (Anker). The text was written by a large and changing number of editors, including M.B. Borkhauser (under whose name the book is sometimes catalogued), J.W. Lichthammer, C.W. Bekker, and others.

A top price for Johann Conrad Susemihl - as previously expected
The work Teutsche Ornithologie, Darmstadt, 1837-1841, 2 volumes by Johann Conrad Susemihl was auctioned at Sothebys in London in May last year. It changed hands for a price of GBP 7,560.00 (€ 8,893.62) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Teutsche Ornithologie, Darmstadt, 1837-1841, 2 volumes is the most expensive artwork by Johann Conrad Susemihl that we have observed at auctions so far.
Ein Spitzenpreis mit Ansage
Die Arbeit Teutsche Ornithologie, Darmstadt, 1837-1841, 2 volumes von Johann Conrad Susemihl kam im Mai letzten Jahres bei Sothebys in London zur Auktion. Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von GBP 7.560,00 (€ 8.893,62) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 6.000,00 – 8.000,00. Auch wenn das Ergebnis damit nicht positiv überraschen konnte, ist Teutsche Ornithologie, Darmstadt, 1837-1841, 2 volumes das teuerste Kunstwerk von Johann Conrad Susemihl, das wir bisher bei Auktionen beobachtet haben.
