Half-titles, engraved portrait, 8 lithographic plates of which 5 hand-coloured, and 85 engraved plates of which 23 hand-coloured. (Half-titles lightly creased, very occasional light spotting; II: p.163 with tiny hole and p.447 with marginal repair; IV: p.25 with clean tear.) Contemporary green half calf gilt, marbled edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Benjamin Harding (book labels to vols I and II) -- George Williams (book labels to vols III and IV).
FIRST EDITION OF A 'MAGNIFICENT PUBLICATION' (Borba de Moraes). The plates agree in number and position to the bookbinder's list in volume I. In 1819, at the author's death, the unsold copies were deposited in a warehouse where some twenty years later they were rediscovered and reissued with an additional 27 plates. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 2,000.00 (€ 2,363.98), 33% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by James Forbes have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Mr Grant shooting near Rothes, on the Spey in May 2007 with an auction result of GBP 11,400.00 (€ 16,775.87).

Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 2.000,00 (€ 2.363,98) und damit 33% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von James Forbes auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Mr Grant shooting near Rothes, on the Spey im Mai 2007 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 11.400,00 (€ 16.775,87).
