Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Hans Bol achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in January last year. In the Master Works on Paper from Five Centuries auction, the work Balaam and the Ass sold for USD 214,200.00 (€ 191,045.31) - well above the upper estimate of USD 80,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Hans Bol; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot An Elegant Hunting Party Before The Abbey Of Rouge-Cloître, Near Brussels sold at auction in July 2011 with the realized price of GBP 241,250.00 (€ 276,870.47).
