Auction result well in line with expectations
In November 2004 Christies in London held the auction MARITIME AND NAVAL BATTLES (PICTURES), which included the work The Queen Hove-To In Mid-Atlantic To Pick Up A Man Overboard by George Mears. The price achieved of GBP 1,195.00 (€ 1,719.00) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 1,000.00 – 1,500.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by George Mears - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A Racing Cutter of The Royal Thames Yacht Club On An Upwind Leg (Illustrated); And On A Downwind Leg, which sold at auction in November 2006 for GBP 2,640.00 (€ 3,920.48).
