Broadsheets (455 x 410 mm). Engraved title, letterpress title with large engraved device with royal coat-of-arms, two engraved section titles, 8 large double-page engravings of tapestries, 32 emblematic half-page engravings by Le Clerc and other artists after Jacques Bailly and Charles Le Brun and 4 double-page plates of tapestries glorifying Louis XIV as issued. Contemporary French red morocco, presentation binding with gilt arms of Louis XIV (Olivier 2494 fer 10) on sides, framed by a triple gilt fillet panel with his crowned cipher in each corner, triple gilt fillet outer border, spine in seven compartments with six raised bands, gilt-lettered in second compartment, a repeated gilt panel in the rest with smaller crowned Louis XIV cipher (Olivier 2494 fer 21) at centers. Provenance: Philip Hofer (bookplate and inscription to the Vershbows).
FIRST EDITION with the most brilliant early impressions of this series that became part of the "Cabinet du Roy." The work, describes two series of tapestries commissioned by Louis XIV, the elements and the seasons, each depicted on four double-page plates of tapestries. In each corner of the tapestries are emblematic roundels which are also shown enlarged in the 32 emblematic illustrations.
