CHAN TIN YAN (B. 1942) The Grand Sails Hanging scroll, ink and acrylic on paper 178.3 x 96.1 cm. (70 1 ⁄ 4 x 37 7 ⁄ 8 in.) Signed, with two seals of the artist Dated 2007 Titleslip entitled, inscribed and signed by the artist, with four seals of the artist Dated January 2008 One seal of the mounter Yau Sang Cheong NOTE: Chan Tin Yan was born in Guangzhou in 1942 and studied at the Canton Academy of Fine Arts in Guangzhou, China and the prestigious L’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. In 1968, he immigrated to Canada to start his career as a professional artist. Chan entered the mainstream Canadian art society in the late 1970s by becoming a Federation of Canadian Artists (F.C.A) member. In 1983, he was the first Chinese artist to be selected by the F.C.A. as a Senior Member of the association, thus being granted the title of S.F.C.A. Chan Tin Yan won several International Awards and Medals. The extent of his achievements was acknowledged in 2011 when the F.C.A. selected him to receive the “Lifetime Achievement Award”. This award was presented to recognise his outstanding contribution to the art world. Chan Tin Yan was the first Asian to receive such a high honour and accomplishment in the 70 years of the Federation’s establishment since 1941.
A top price for Chan Tin Yan
In February this year Christies in Hong Kong held the auction Dawn of Spring – Chinese Paintings Online, which included the work The Grand Sails by Chan Tin Yan. The »bidding war« ended at HKD 100,800.00 (€ 12,112.73), 26% above the upper estimate. With this result, The Grand Sails is even the most expensive work of art by Chan Tin Yan that we have observed at auctions so far.
Ein Spitzenpreis für Chan Tin Yan
Im Februar diesen Jahres führte Christies in Hong Kong die Auktion Dawn of Spring – Chinese Paintings Online durch, in der auch die Arbeit The Grand Sails von Chan Tin Yan zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von HKD 100.800,00 (€ 12.112,73) und damit 26% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Mit diesem Ergebnis ist The Grand Sails sogar das teuerste Kunstwerk von Chan Tin Yan, das wir bisher bei Auktionen beobachtet haben.
