A top price for Bartholomäus Sarburgh - as previously expected
In January 2024 Christies in New York held the auction Old Master Paintings and Sculpture: Part II, which included the work Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter-length, holding a quill; and Portrait of a Lady, three-quarter-length, holding her girdle by Bartholomäus Sarburgh. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of USD 20,000.00 – 30,000.00, the actual price achieved of USD 21,420.00 (€ 18,720.50) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter-length, holding a quill; and Portrait of a Lady, three-quarter-length, holding her girdle is the most expensive artwork by Bartholomäus Sarburgh that we have observed at auctions so far.
