Auction result misses estimated price range

When the work Schema Corporis Solaris and Typus Corporis Lunaris, from Mundus Subterraneus, in XII Libros digestus by Athanasius Kircher was auctioned at Christies in New York in April 2002, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 2,500.00 – 3,500.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 1,527.50 (€ 1,696.85). Other works by Athanasius Kircher have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in April 2013 by the work Latium. Id est, nova & parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi description. Amsterdam: apud Johannem Janssonium & the heirs of Elizei Weyerstraet, 1671. 2° (380 x 240mm). Engraved additional title by Romeyn de Hooghe, portrait of the dedicatee Pope Clement X at GBP 2,250.00 (€ 2,655.13).

Id est, nova & parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi description. Amsterdam: apud Johannem Janssonium & the heirs of Elizei Weyerstraet, 1671. 2° (380 x 240mm).
