Auction result well in line with expectations
In July 2021 Christies in London held the auction Old Masters Evening Sale, which included the work Group portrait of Lady Elizabeth Smith-Stanley, Countess of Derby (1753-1797), with her infant son Edward, later 13th Earl of Derby (1775-1851), and her half-sister, Lady Augusta Campbell (1760-1831) playing the harp by Angelika Kauffmann. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 500,000.00 – 800,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 562,500.00 (€ 659,647.88) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Angelika Kauffmann - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait Of Mary May (1745-1824) With Her Three Daughters; And Portrait Of Joseph May (1730-1796) With Their Three Sons, which sold at auction in December 2013 for GBP 1,106,500.00 (€ 1,330,947.89).
