The artist Le Pho

  • Vietnamese painter associated with Post-Impressionism
  • Combined Oriental artistry with influences of contemporary Western art.
  • Painted mainly Vietnamese landscapes, still lifes with flowers, family situations and portraits.

The Vietnamese painter Lê Phổ was born in Hanoi on 02.08.1907 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi from 1925 to 1930. Thanks to a scholarship, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Here he learned from Victor Tardieu, a former classmate and friend of Henri Matisse. After graduating, he initially returned to Hanoi, but moved back to Paris in 1937, where his first solo exhibition took place a year later. This exhibition marked the start of his career as an artist in Europe. It was then followed by exhibitions in Nice, Lyon, Strasbourg, Nantes, Brussels, Algiers, Casablanca, Caracas, Buenos Aires, New York and San Francisco, to name but a few.

He also exhibited regularly at the Salon des Independants (Paris) and was a winner at the International Beaux-Arts Exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City. Despite travelling extensively, Lê Phổ lived and worked in Paris from 1937 until his death on 02.12.2001. Before his passing, he donated 20 of his works to the Vietnamese National Museum of Fine Arts.

In the course of his life, changes in Phổs painting style can be discerned. For instance, his work from his time in Hanoi and his first years in Paris mainly depicts Vietnamese landscapes suffused with nostalgia and historical splendour. In the 1930s and early 40s, he painted mainly bamboo, birds and lotus blossoms with watercolour on silk using long, thin brushes. Inspired and influenced by artists such as Pierre Bonnard and Odilon Redon, sensual female figures, often portrayed in an interior setting, were added to his motifs from the 1950s onwards.

The often elongated figures suggest a Surrealist influence, but overall the majority of Phổ's work is classified as Post-Impressionist. In 1963, the US gallerist Wally Findlay (owner of Findlay Galleries) became aware of Phổ's work and sold many of his pieces on the US market. Now painting mainly in oils on canvas, Phổ surrounded his female figures, clearly depicted as Vietnamese, with lush, opulent landscapes. His internationally best-known works date from this period.
