RUSSIAN, 18TH CENTURY
The panel reproduces the image of the Virgin and Child originally found in the Monastery of St. Theodore Stratelates, which was considered to have been painted by St. Luke. The facial features are finely painted. The range of colours and the intense striations, especially on Christ's clothes, follow the Byzantine style. - 10¾ x 12½in. (27.25 x 31.75cm.)
