Acquired directly from the artist, Baroda, late 1970s | Vinodini and Satyapal Mayor moved to Baroda in the 1950s. Vinodini, a professor of Mathematics at the MS University of Baroda, and Satyapal, who worked at Satyadev Chemicals, were well connected with the social and contemporary art scene of the city. In the 1960s, Vinodoni established what was to become the famous Artist's Colony, behind their home Kamal Cottage in the grounds of the Shiv Mahal Palace. The colony played host to a number of

Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Bhupen Khakhar achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in March last year. In the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art auction, the work Sheikh Shoe Mart sold for USD 1,381,000.00 (€ 1,244,929.23) - well above the upper estimate of USD 500,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Bhupen Khakhar; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Residency Bungalow sold at auction in June this year with the realized price of GBP 1,984,400.00 (€ 2,309,499.96).
Oberer Schätzpreis um mehr als 100% übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Bhupen Khakhar erzielte im März letzten Jahres bei Sothebys in New York einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art wurde die Arbeit Sheikh Shoe Mart für USD 1.381.000,00 (€ 1.244.929,23) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von USD 500.000,00. Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Bhupen Khakhar; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit Residency Bungalow im Juni diesen Jahres mit dem Hammerpreis von GBP 1.984.400,00 (€ 2.309.499,96).
