AN ILLUMINATED BORDER
SIGNED MUHAMMAD AMIN, SAFAVID IRAN, DATED AH 929/1522-23 AD
On black card, the borders with cusped medallions, two containing finely painted figures seated with their legs crossed before them, a third with a winged figure holding a wine glass and cup, calligraphic cartouches with yellow nasta'liq between them, the inner edge with two half medallions and a small cartouche containing the signature kamtarin Muhammad Amin and the date 929, the cartouches and medallions on a ground of elegant silhouette floral scrolls on a dense speckled ground, some scrolls terminating in animals' heads, the border framing a folio from a fine 16th century manuscript with 11ll. of neat nasta'liq in two columns, space left for heading, the text panel pasted over a miniature, laid down on card, minor flaking and losses to the edges
