RUSSIAN, 16TH CENTURY
The saint's full military attire complemented by a floating, red cape, riding a white, robust and rearing horse, the neck collar, bridles and saddle with gold and gem studded bands, St. George holding his horse's reins and plunging his long lance of cruciform finial into the winged dragon's open mouth, the blessing hand of God emerging from the celestial segment above, an angel carrying a crown and descending from the skies towards the saint, the rescued Princess Elisaba pausing at the gate of the tower, a number of people attending the miraculous event through the windows and atop the fort, the Royal couple leading the group of the witnesses, the King crossing himself, the Queen extending her hands in prayer, the background depicting a mountainous, barren landscape to the left, contrary to the dense architectural composition of the opposite side, rendered mostly with muted, pastel nuances
