The Ice Transformation series / Eis-Wandlung has its origin in repeated stays in the North of Iceland in winter. The challenge is the physical and sensory perception and precise observation of cold. Different degrees of cold cause different appearences of ice, snow and the adjacent , mighty North Atlantic. Color, shape, acoustic, atmospheric and aestetic changes are perceptible.
A very intense experience of exposing yourself to the forces of nature.

As much as this journey was driven
by the eager anticipation of an
encounter with the renowned northern
lights, so it was that abruptly
and incredibly they appeared one
night above the city of Reykjavik.
Not in the pure darkness nor in the
surrounding expanse of landscape,
instead just in place above blocks
of flats, ice and snow. And there
they were, in icy and inhospitable
brightness, flowing in their majestic
path across the heavens. In colours
never encountered before and with
an extraordinary flow of movement
never previously experienced. Those
brief moments in which time stood
still, with us in a chance meeting
with something beyond comparison.
There they were in their absoluteness,
with no history and no meaning,
just there. For seconds - maybe
minutes - then disappearing again
into the distant cavern of darkness.
An airiness previously physically
unknown to me, there in the darkness
- I can still feel it, and it is still
beyond mere words or
tired description.

The Show Down series is my current confrontation with the powerful forces of fire and ice, the opponents on our planet. They make life possible and are the basis of our continued existence on this planet.
But these powerful elements are also able to prevent life or, in the worst case, wipe it out.
