The German painter and sculptor Rainer Fetting was born in late 1949 in Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony. He became known in the 1970s as part of the group Neue Wilde (also: Junge Wilde or Moritzboys), which founded the Galerie am Moritzplatz in Berlin as an »artists' self-help project.« The young artists had found each other in the class of Hans Jaenisch during their studies at the Hochschule für Künste in Berlin.
Fetting completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and also a traineeship as a stage designer at the Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord in his hometown of Wilhelmshaven before attending the Berlin Art Academy in 1972. He gained international renown after participating in various relevant group exhibitions in the early 1980s, such as Zeitgeist (1982) at the Gropius-Bau in Berlin - the subsequent, annual solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA helped him achieve success. A first comprehensive retrospective was dedicated to him in 2020 by Gottorf Castle in Schleswig-Holstein.
Fetting's portfolio ranges from Berlin city scenes to portraits and other figurations. He dealt with the Berlin Wall in rich colors, for example, but also worked on German history with his well-known Willy Brandt statue. At 3.4 meters high and weighing 500 kilograms, it sits prominently in the atrium of the Willy Brandt House in Berlin – a somewhat smaller replica of it can be seen in Stockholm's Willy Brandt Park. Although Fetting also made photographs and films, primarily in the 1970s, his paintings and sculptures are more familiar.
Fetting's work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His works are part of the public collections of renowned art houses such as the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt a. M. and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. The artist lives and works in Berlin and on Sylt.

Der deutsche Maler und Bildhauer Rainer Fetting wurde Ende 1949 im niedersächsischen Wilhelmshaven geboren. Bekannt wurde er in den 1970er Jahren als Teil der Gruppe Neue Wilde (auch: Junge Wilde oder Moritzboys), die die Galerie am Moritzplatz in Berlin als »Künstlerselbsthilfeprojekt« gegründet hat. Gefunden hatten sich die jungen Künstlerinnen und Künstler in der Klasse von Hans Jaenisch während ihres Studiums an der Hochschule für Künste in Berlin.
Fetting absolvierte eine Lehre zum Tischler und außerdem ein Volontariat beim Bühnenbildner an der Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord in seiner Heimatstadt Wilhelmshaven, ehe er 1972 die Berliner Kunsthochschule besuchte. Internationales Renommee erhielt er, nachdem er Anfang der 1980er Jahre an verschiedenen relevanten Gruppenausstellungen, wie etwa Zeitgeist (1982) im Gropius-Bau in Berlin, teilgenommen hatte – die folgenden, jährlichen Einzelausstellungen in Europa und den USA verhalfen ihm zum Erfolg. Eine erste umfassende Retrospektive widmete ihm 2020 das Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig-Holstein.
Von Berliner Stadtszenen über Porträts und andere Figurationen erstreckt sich Fettings Portfolio. Farbenstark setzte er sich etwa mit der Berliner Mauer auseinander, arbeitete die deutsche Geschichte aber auch mit seiner bekannten Willy-Brandt-Statue auf. Mit 3,4 Metern Höhe und einem Gewicht von 500 Kilogramm thront sie prominent im Atrium des Willy-Brandt-Hauses in Berlin – eine etwas kleinere Replik davon gibt es im Stockholmer Willy-Brandt-Park zu sehen. Obwohl Fetting vorrangig in den 1970ern auch Fotos und Filme fertigte, sind seine Gemälde und Skulpturen geläufiger.
Fettings Werk war in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen zu sehen. Seine Arbeiten gehören zu den öffentlichen Sammlungen namhafter Kunsthäuser wie dem Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, dem Kunstmuseum in Basel, der Vancouver Art Gallery, dem Städel Museum in Frankfurt a. M. oder der National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Der Künstler lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und auf Sylt.
