Leslie Hewitt (b. 1977) is a US-based contemporary artist. Her works are hybrids between photography and sculpture, some of which she arranges into site-specific installations. She employs the illusory capabilities of photography as well as the physical properties of sculpture.
Notions of time and space carry Hewitt's ideas: She incorporates personal memorabilia such as family photographs or books and old magazines that reference the black literature and popular culture of her childhood. She is interested in how people construct meaning and memory. She frames her works with the physics of the exhibition space, leaning some of them against the wall - her exploration of space and time also includes site-specific installations and cinematic elements. Hewitt is said to approach the genre of still life from a postminimalist perspective.
Hewitt was born in New York's St. Albans neighborhood. She earned a bachelor's degree from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York in 2000, and a master's degree in sculpture from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 2004. Between 2001 and 2003, she was a Clark Scholar in Africana Studies and Cultural Studies at New York University. In 2008, she participated in the Whitney Biennial - and in the same year, she received the Art Matters research grant to the Netherlands.
Between 2012 and 2017, she taught at Barnard College in the Department of Art History. Today, she is an associate professor of art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and co-organizes the Cooper Union School of Art Intra-Disciplinary Lecture Series with curator and writer Omar Berrada.

For Midday Studies, Hewitt arranged modern everyday objects such as magazines, family photographs, and mass-produced goods into still lifes that echo the tradition of early modern Dutch painting. Hewitt's ancestors settled in New York's Harlem neighborhood, which was founded by Dutch immigrants from Haarlem. Her Midday photographs reflect colonialism and the slave trade, the basis for the ostentatious lives of wealthy Europeans, in the present day. The series dates from 2010.
Hewitt's Dia Bridgehampton exhibition on Long Island at the Dia Art Foundation is a solo exhibition that ran for nearly a year from June 24, 2022. In it, Hewitt presented minimalist sculptures that she used to explore phenomena such as light, sound, and mass inertia. The sculptures are located inside and outside the gallery. The show was curated by Matilde Guidelli-Guidi.
