When the exhibition building becomes the artist's material
Dora Budor is a versatile artist whose works appeal to all the senses. In the exhibition Dora Budor: Continent, starting March 19, the Kunsthaus Bregenz itself becomes a work of art: the artist makes building structures visible and directs the senses of visitors to what is hidden.
For Dora Budor (*1984), buildings are more than just walls and a roof: the trained architect explores the intrinsic life of a structure. She reveals its secrets that lie hidden - and invites all the senses to participate in the art experience. In Dora Budor: Continent, from March 19 to June 26, 2022, the Kunsthaus Bregenz itself becomes a work of art. So-called collector corridors extend around the building's foundation, providing access to supply lines. Budor appoints the collector corridor as a work of art, she removes sediments, obstructs accesses: a new experience of an unknown environment.
On the upper floors, Budor places remote-controlled sex toys in the ventilation shafts and, through the vibrations, demands visitors' attention to an unconscious process: the supply of fresh air, an elaborate aspect of building design. In the exhibition spaces, Budor shows smaller sculptures such as the Pucks (bagarreurs) made of coffee grounds or a melted, reshaped bicycle in Something To Remind Me. Dora Budor is a participant in the 59th Venice Biennale this year.
With the exhibition Hanns Kunitzberger: Likeness 2002-2005, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting the multi-part work of the same name by the Austrian artist. The multi-layered, abstract paintings have a magnetic effect on viewers. The exhibition opens on November 29.
In a major exhibition with over 150 exhibits, the Tate Modern sheds light on the beginnings of optical, kinetic and digital art. From November 28, the works of numerous renowned artists will be on display in Electric Dreams: Art and Technology Before the Internet in London.
