»Surrealism is not a style, but a state of mind.« - The Tate Modern in London flirts with this thesis to paraphrase its current exhibition Surrealism Beyond Borders. Starting on 24 February, the art institution is attempting to do justice to Surrealism far from the Paris city limits and far after the 1920s, and to »rewrite the history of the revolutionary art movement«. In the comprehensive group exhibition, it shows how the art movement established itself worldwide. And the time period also extends beyond the decade usually presented: the exhibits spanned five decades and came from artists from Buenos Aires, Cairo, Lisbon, Mexico City, Prague, Seoul and Tokyo.
The works, unknown to many, were brought together based on extensive research supported by the Hyundai Tate Research Centre in partnership with Hyundai Motor and are now presented by Eyal Ofer Galleries. The exhibition was organised by the Tate Modern and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York - the unconventional selection of surrealist works can be seen until 29 August.
