Featuring more than ninety drawings by thirteen international artists, the Drawing Center in New York presents Drawing in the Continuous Present, beginning March 10. It aims to explore how a new generation of artists is placing drawing at the center of contemporary art discourse. To that end, works on paper by some of the most important artists of the present will be on display. They include Michael Armitage, Florencia Rodriguez Giles, Christine Sun Kim, Helen Marten, Jean Katambayi Mukendi, Julien Nguyen, Sanou Oumar, Walter Price, and He Xiangyu, among others. As part of the Drawing Center's longstanding support of contemporary drawing practices and drafters, Drawing in the Continuous Present through May 22, 2022 will highlight forms of drawing work that reflect a variety of experiences and the diversity of artistic production.
The title of the exhibition, Drawing in the Continuous Present, is based on the term »continuous present« coined by Gertrude Stein. The artist Amy Sillman later used it to describe a key element of drawing. The term »continuous present« as used in the current exhibition is meant to be a metaphor for the way in which the artists on display use the immediacy of drawing to convey their relationships to the world.
