Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of Warren Hastings (1732-1818), Governor-General of Bengal, half-length, in a dark blue coat and white cravat by Lemuel Francis Abbott was auctioned at Christies in London in December 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 15,000.00 – 25,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 12,500.00 (€ 13,128.64). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Lemuel Francis Abbott achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Horatio, Viscount Nelson, KB, Vice-Admiral of the White, half-length, in naval uniform -- The Kilgraston sketch, 1797 in October 2005 with an auction result of GBP 164,800.00 (€ 243,030.20).
