Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In June 2006 Christies in London held the auction British Pictures 1500-1850, which included the work Portrait of James Hatch (C.1751-1806), of Claybury Hall, Essex, Half-Length, In A Brown Coat And White Cravat by Lemuel Francis Abbott. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 9,360.00 (€ 13,543.76), 17% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Lemuel Francis Abbott achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Horatio, Viscount Nelson, KB, Vice-Admiral of the White, half-length, in naval uniform -- The Kilgraston sketch, 1797 in October 2005 with an auction result of GBP 164,800.00 (€ 243,030.20).
